Managing innovation is a constant challenge.  In two new books, four leading authorities lay out best practice in the field based on years of study and engagement with practitioners from across the world.

‘The Management of Technological Innovation’ by Mark Dodgson, David M Gann and Ammon Salter uses theory and empirical evidence to explain how firms can best organise innovation processes across a wide range of sectors.

*  ‘ Inventing Entrepreneurs’ by Professor Gerry George and Adam Bock shows how scientific inventors can become successful entrepreneurs, from the pre-start-up phase through to exit. Both books are structured to provide straightforward and sequential learning for practitioners and students.

Who should attend: Innovation policymakers; inventors in innovative companies; researchers considering technology commercialization options; business professionals who work with inventing entrepreneurs; technology transfer office managers; university administrators, and general readers interested in exploring the entrepreneurial journeys of successful entrepreneurs; students, lecturers and academics of Innovation, Technology and Management, including those taking Masters, MBAs, or advanced undergraduate courses.

On Tuesday 11th March, we are delighted that authors of both books will join us at NESTA to present their work and engage in debate and discussion. To find out more and to take part in the conversation, please join us for what we are sure will be a stimulating and thought-provoking evening.

When: Tuesday 11th March, 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Where: NESTA, 1 Plough Place, London, EC4A 1DE

About the books and the authors Dodgson, M., Gann D. and Salter, A. The Management of Technological Innovation: Strategy and Practice. Oxford University Press, 2008.

The management of technological innovation (MTI) is one of the most important challenges facing businesses today.  This new edition of this popular book combines the most relevant theoretical analysis with contemporary and historical empirical evidence to provide a comprehensive, yet concise and readable, guide to the challenges of MTI.

‘The Management of Technological Innovation’ examines innovation in large and small firms, networks and communities, and in a wide range of services and manufacturing sectors.  It analyses new models and strategies for organising the innovation process, presents strong empirical analysis set in a robust theoretical framework, offers a large number of international case studies, from Europe, USA, China, India and Latin America and provides a clear sequential structure to aid learning.

Professor David Gann is head of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group, Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London. He holds the Chair in Technology and Innovation Management – a joint appointment between the Tanaka Business School and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This post enables new research and teaching opportunities to be developed and exploited, linking issues in social sciences and business management with those in engineering, science, technology and medicine. David’s personal research includes work recently published in Think, Play, Do: Technology, Innovation, and Organization, co-authored with Mark Dodgson and Ammon Salter, on the intensification of innovation, focusing on ‘Innovation Technology’ (IvT). A Chartered Civil Engineer, David consults with a number of leading companies, and is Group Innovation Executive at Laing O’Rourke and Chairman of the Think Play Do Group.

Professor Mark Dodgson is Director of the Technology and Innovation Management Centre at the University of Queensland Business School, Visiting Professor at the Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London, and an International Fellow at the Advanced Institute of Management Research in the UK. He was previously Executive Director of the National Graduate School of Management at the Australian National University. Mark has lectured and researched widely throughout Europe, North America, Asia and Latin America, and has been an invited participant at international conferences in over 35 countries. He has been an advisor and consultant to many European Commission programmes and to numerous UK, US, European, Asian, and Australian government departments and agencies. He has produced ten books and over 90 academic articles and reports on innovation.

Dr Ammon Salter is a Reader in Innovation Management in the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Group at the Tanaka Business School, Imperial College London and a Fellow of the Advanced Institute of Management. After finishing his doctorate in 1999 at the University of Sussex, he worked at Science Policy Research Unit on a range of projects for HM Treasury, the Department of Trade and Industry (UK) and the Ove Arup Foundation as well as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). He joined Imperial in 2003, where he is now co-Director of the Innovation Studies Centre. In 2005, he was awarded the Ghoshal Fellowhip from the Advanced Institute of Management. He has written three books and published in a range of leading academic journals including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Organization Studies, Industrial and Corporate Change, and Research Policy. He is an associate editor of Industry and Innovation. His current research focuses on the distributed and open models of innovation and the role of networks in shaping innovative performance.

‘Inventing Entrepreneurs’ by AIM Innovation Fellow, Professor Gerry George and Adam Bock

‘Inventing Entrepreneurs’ spotlights the experiences of scientific researchers who participate in commercialising their innovations. Through in-depth interviews, the book describes the key decisions inventors must make on their entrepreneurial journeys. The book draws on experiences of scientists who participated in successful and unsuccessful ventures to identify common pitfalls, encourage purposeful planning and self-reflection, and prepare the entrepreneurs for a transforming experience.

George and Bock incorporate learning from their own ventures and interactions with inventing entrepreneurs to develop a model for the entrepreneurial journey. The model, combined with common journey paths identified in the research, can help researchers prepare for commercialisation processes and evaluate their own proclivities and capabilities for entrepreneurship.

From pre-startup phase through exit, the book provides the broadest picture of the technology commercialisation process. The authors provide suitable frameworks for understanding and evaluating an inventor’s interest, capacity, and priorities for participating in new venture formation.  The book examines and explains the critical factors that spark and fuel successful entrepreneurial journeys. It also provides basic business information to help bridge the gap between scientific research and technology venture administration.

Gerry George is Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and AIM Innovation Fellow of the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and serves as the Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Gerry is an expert on managing innovation in technology-based companies and has successfully launched ventures of his own. He serves on the boards of high technology companies and is actively engaged in guiding startups and large companies on technology venturing and entrepreneurship.  In October 2007, he completed a special report for the European Venture Capital Association titled Scaling Current Boundaries on the early stage venture capital and fundraising environment in Europe.  His current project investigates the global diffusion of human embryonic stem cells and innovation patterns in the biotechnology industry.  He serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Business Venturing and Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.

Adam J. Bock is currently reading for his PhD at Imperial College London. He has co-founded two early-stage medical device companies and served as interim CEO of a third; all three companies were spin-outs of university research. He spent four years facilitating angel investments in high-technology companies, reviewing more than 1,000 early-stage business plans; this work resulted in nearly $10 million in private investment. Bock has taught entrepreneurship at the University of Wisconsin Madison School of Business MBA program and has given dozens of seminars on technology evaluation and private financing. He has consulted on technology transfer and the venture start-up process, both for universities and entrepreneurs.
